Fall 2004 Season |
| The San Diego Comic Con is by far the largest comic book convention in the country, probably in the world. 2004's estimates ran about 80,000-100,000 guests and attendees. While the temptation to cover many of the media types there to promote their upcoming comic book/SF movies, this was a great chance to talk to as many comic book professionals as possible. |

With so many potential interviewees, it was more instinct that drew me to the ones featured. Unfortunately, a combination of lack of time, adjoining booths playing music at top volumes, a missing back-up battery, and guests who disappeared at just the "right" time kept the ones we taped but left out fortunately fewer than I worried that I'd have to. Guests were asked to simply introduce themselves, tell when they got started in comics (either by year or project, their choice) and what they were up to. About half the guests I had met before, some I knew rather well, one I had babysat his kids nearly 30 years earlier (ulp!), and others I had always wanted to meet and now had my chance. I even learned I had been mentally mispronouncing Colleen Doran's last name incorrectly, even though I've known Colleen since the early 80s! Certainly I'll make a return trip to San Diego to get those that got away from me... there's certainly no shortage of guests at San Diego. |
