What was perhaps the final Atlanta Comic Con (the organizers took 2005 off) took place in April of 2004 was finally downloaded, edited, and graphically enhanced. Special guests included a couple of comic book art greats who rarely make appearances: Brian Bolland (his first trip to the U.S. in over 8 years) and Mike Kaluta.

Brian Bolland spoke of much of his work, including his acclaimed work on Batman: The Killing Joke
I approached this convention as I do most... let the pros talk about what they've done in the past, what they're currently working on, or planning to. Fill that out with the "Seven Silly Questions" -- asked of anybody and everybody, professional or fan -- willing to give their opinions on all things comics. In the final edit, I didn't include two of the questions. Largely due to time constraints, but those two questions were a little hard to graphically enhance, so you won't see the answers to "What is the worst mistake made in comic books?" (yeah, I know, rather vague, though "multiple covers" seemed to come up a lot, nor will you see the answers to "Which comic book would you most like to see brought back and revived?" Problem here might be my own shrinking awareness of the many books out there, folks were naming characters I had never heard of!

But the ones that did make the final show, with some real doozies of answers to some were:

  • What comic book is on top of your "must-read" pile?
  • What's your favorite costume in comic books?
  • Who's the best comic book villain?
  • I gave them 15 seconds, and said "Name as many past or present members of the X-Men... GO!"
  • Which comic book character would you most like to go out partying with?

What was most interesting about the X-Men question was how poorly some of the folks who had WORKED on the book along the way did, although the best job (naming 12 in 15 seconds) was by a professional (who you'll have to watch the show to see who that was) that I'm not sure ever worked on any of the many X-Men books!

As for the partying question, it seemed rather apparent, more by the second day, many women were having a hard time separating Wolverine from Hugh Jackman (although a couple of guys also named him, in hopes of seeing a good bar fight). What surprised me was the 2nd most named character... Dazzler??

Mike Kaluta explained the intricate work in the creation of his cover for The Shadow #1.
Karl Story names Hellboy as his "must-read" book... which didn't surprise me at all
Tom Feister of the Jolly Roger Studio explains his role as "Whipping Boy"
One woman wants to go out partying with Wolverine because "he can open my beer"
Kasey Castleberry wouldn't mind going out with Cyclops, "especially if it's Marsden"
George Lowe, voice of Space Ghost, asked the all-important "party with" question
If it was only Mercy Van Vlack who named Dazzler, I'd understand it...
Colorist guru JD Mettler most wanted to go out partying with Jack Knight...
...while "Brenda Starr" artist June Brigman couldn't get Hugh off her mind
